This week, the National League for Democracy (NLD), the party of Nobel Peace Prize winner, Daw Aung San Suu Kyi and the main opposition party, announced that they would boycott the first elections in Myanmar in 20 years. Their participation had been previously slated as being key for the elections to be legitimate.

"We will ask the people around us not to vote in the election: Please boycott," said U Win Tin, a founding member and strategist for the NLD in a telephone interview with the New York Times. Unjust election laws imposed by Myanmar's military junta would have force Suu Kyi to step down as leader of the party had it chosen to register for the election. Ongoing repression of Myanmar's ethic minorities was also cited as reason against participating. However, by not participating, the party will likely face dissolution in the coming months.
