714 people were put to death in 18 countries in 2009, an Amnesty International report stated this week. This number does not included executions in China, which Amnesty estimates could number in the thousands (China has refused to release the actual number).

"The death penalty is cruel and degrading, and an affront to human dignity," said Claudio Cordone, Amnesty International's Interim Secretary General. The organization argues that capital punishment is often applied extensively to send political messages, to silence opponents or to promote political agendas in China, Iran and Sudan – clearly infringing on the right to life.
