72 million children around the world do not have the basic right to education. The Millennium Development Goals, agreed to by leaders around the world, called for universal primary school education for all by 2015, but with only five years left this is still far from a reality.
The 1GOAL campaign, coordinated by the Global Campaign for Education, aims to deliver a legacy out of this year's 1st World Cup in Africa: education for all. To achieve this, 1GOAL, which is backed by over 100 organisations in over 100 countries including FIFA, will be putting pressure on governments around the world to deliver the extra $12 billion a year that is needed to pay for every child to attend school.
"As humanity unites around the World Cup, millions of people are joining together to demand Education for All and to protect the right of every child to go to school" said Her Majesty Queen Rania of Jordan, co-chair of 1GOAL. "Together, we're sending a message to world leaders: live up to your promises and give every child an education, because today, 72 million children are denied their only escape from poverty, their strongest shield against disease: their right to an education. This summer, as countries vie for the world championship, let's make sure governments are once more champions of children by signing up to 1GOAL."
